Rangers’ Rookie Represses Hot Angel Offense
In his debut, pitcher Matt Harrison had to be nervous. Early on, luck did not seem to be going his way when the game was delayed for almost an hour, drawing out the fact that his lifetime goal was about to come true; a shot to pitch in a major league baseball game. But when the rain finally let up, things definitely went his way. Harrison went seven innings, holding the Angels to only two runs, the fewest they’ve scored in days. Especially in Arlington, one of the most hitter-friendly parks in the game, the final score of 3-2 was a low one. Joe Saunders, who had other things on his mind with a baby expected at home, pitched a respectable loss, giving up only three runs in a complete game. He did not relate the loss to the baby, however, and told reporters he was “locked in, and if there were any butterflies, it would be on the other team.”
The Angels offense had an off night, having five batters go without hits. Not to say they didn’t hit the ball sharply. All four trips to the plate, Chone Figgins smoked the baseball, but right at Ranger fielders. That seemed to be the case for everyone tonight, as the Angels lacked the neccessary run support and fall to a modest 54-36, an even 5 games above the second place team Athletics.
Tomorrow night, the Angels are set to face yet another first-timer and are hoping to get the best of him.
