Moseley Makes the Most of It

It made most Angel fans slightly apprehensive to learn that their starting pitcher had left the ballpark. It made them even more uneasy when they found out that the new starting pitcher was Dustin Moseley, who didn’t have the best record in the Majors with a 7.85 ERA and who in the past, had always pitched worse against the A’s than any other team. So it was no surprise when in the first inning, he gave up two runs on four singles with 21 pitches pitched. There’s no doubt that fans may have been thinking, “There goes the game.”

But, Moseley managed to settle down quickly, then retiring 14 of the next 15 batters. He got the Angels back in the game and the fans were taken by surprise when he lasted over five innings. He just might be getting the hang of the majors.

“That’s the way Dustin threw the ball for us most of the time last year,” Scioscia said.  ”That was impressive to see and important to see. He threw the ball as well as he ever has. That’s a huge step forward for Dustin.”

Although pitching kept the game close, the Angels were still losing in the top of the ninth. Hunter worked an eight-pitch walk to start the Angels late inning rally. Aybar also laid down an infield single on account of his speed and scored to tie the game and go ahead as well. The Angels handed the ball over to Frankie with a tentative lead and hoped for the best. He had to make things interesting when he walked a batter and let another man on with no outs. But he got one when a sacrifice moved the runners over and then two more with a strikeout to lock in his 38th save of the season, setting an all-time record which might prove tough to beat. The Angels won the game 4-3 and took the series with the A’s. This moves their lead to six games over Oakland and gives them in a comfotable position going into the upcoming All-Star break.
