Santana didn’t do a bad job tonight. It was the failed clutch performances by the Angels offense that ended a five game winning streak and added an L in the loss column. After the Indians got two deciding homeruns off of Santana and one off of Speier, the Angels seemed to give up, drowning every chance they had to put some pressure on Paul Byrd and the rest of the Cleveland’s pitching staff.

Ervin Santana gave up three earned runs in his seven innings of work tonight, which normally may not have mattered with a hot Angel offense. But tonight, the Angels just couldn’t get those big clutch hits with runners in scoring position, despite having quite a few chances. Maicer Izturis flied out with the bases loaded early in the game after Mathis hit an RBI single in the second. Matthews also returned to the lineup, featuring his usual struggles. He went 0 for 4 with a run scoring error in right field.

Howie Kendrick did his job offensively, though, hitting his third homerun of the year out to center, but it didn’t help much as they fell 5-2 in this first game of the three game series vs Cleveland.
