Angels Sweep Away Competition
The Angels finally were able to return the favor. They got the three game sweep of Boston this weekend, doing to Boston what they had done to the Angels last postseason. They have a modest five game winning streak going back to before the break against the A’s. It couldn’t have come against a better team as this may be what the Angels need if they are to play another postseason battle with the Sox.
It was close, though, as the closer may have just as easily been Papelbon instead of Rodriguez. Vladimir Guerrero made a significant error in right when he dropped a line drive that scored the Sox’s 3rd run, but Rivera and Kotchman both hit doubles off of Boston pitcher Delcarman in the 8th to put the Angels back on top and Frankie was able to keep it that way when he clinched his 40th save of the season.
Guerrero did go deep, however, in the second on a hanging knuckle ball which he drove into the far left field seats. The Angels got back to back flys as on the very next pitch, Torii Hunter sent one into the bullpens in center. That was Vladdy’s 17th and Torii’s 13th.
The Angels get the vital sweep and go up 9 games on the struggling A’s who lost again today to the hot Yankees. Texas is also 9 games back and closing in on the A’s. Cleveland will be coming to town tomorrow as former Angel Byrd is set to face Angels ace Santana.
