9th Inning Rally Not Enough to Overcome Errors
The Angels tied yet another record in Saturday’s game against the Jays, just not the record they’d wanted to. They made four fielding errors throughout the game, three of which were made by aggressive plays. Matthews charged a liner by Rios in the second and had it bounce past him on to the wall in left field; Figgins made the second of the night, charging Wells’ grounder to try for a double play and Napoli was the third, rushing a throw into left on Rios’ steal of third in the seventh inning. Kotchman substituted the fourth by not reaching first base in time on a grounder in the hole by Brad Wilkerson. All these plays combined to make up a loss for the Angels, bringing their current record to 53-35.

John Lackey went six innings, giving up six of the Blue Jays’ seven runs, five of which were earned. He is now 6-2, still doing remarkably well for missing spring training because of an injury. You can’t say that he didn’t get a decent amount of run support, but it was all attained after he was pulled from the game. In fact, two of the Angels’ five runs were scored in the bottom of the ninth in a last chance rally by the offense. Garret Anderson walked and Gary Matthews Jr. singled. Howie Kendrick’s RBI single to right was followed by a double-play grounder by Mike Napoli, scoring in the second run. Chone Figgins’ third hit of the night, a double, gave fans a spark of hope for a dramatic comeback, but Casey Kotchman fly ball to deep right-center fell short, ending the rally.
The offense has been picking up, however, having scored 25 runs in the past four games as to the meager 2 runs in the previous four. Vladimir Guerrero picked up a two-run homer, hitting yet another ball well below the knees over into the deepest part of the field. Trouble was, that Vernon Wells on the Blue Jays quickly matched that with a two-run shot in the fifth.
The final score was 7-5, Blue Jays, which ended a 3 game winning streak the Angels had going and forces them to win tomorrow to get the series.
